25 minThis sandwich lands right in that sweet-and-savory breakfast zone where ham meets honey and nobody complains. Toasted frozen waffles stand in for bread, layered with deli ham and crowned with apple slices caramelized in butter and honey.
The honey-apple syrup is dead simple: honey warmed with apple juice until pourable. It goes over the whole stack like a warm, fruity maple syrup substitute. The caramelized apples on top bring a buttery, slightly sticky sweetness with just enough bite left in them to contrast the soft waffle.
Four minutes in the skillet is all the apples need. Pull them when they’re lightly golden and still crisp-tender. Overcooked apples turn to mush and slide right off the sandwich.
Pro Tips
- Use a crisp apple variety like Honeycrisp or Fuji. They hold their shape when cooked and don’t break down into sauce.
- Toast the waffles until they’re firm and slightly crunchy. Soft waffles can’t support the ham and toppings without collapsing.
- Warm the ham slices briefly in the skillet after the apples come out. Room-temperature deli ham against hot waffles and warm syrup feels wrong.
Variations
- Swap ham for thick-cut bacon for a crispier, smokier version.
- Add a slice of sharp cheddar between the ham and the top waffle. The cheese melts from the heat and ties everything together.
- Use real maple syrup mixed with apple cider instead of the honey-apple syrup.
Ingredients
Directions
In small saucepan, combine ½ cup honey and apple juice.
Stir over medium heat until heated through.
Set aside and keep warm. In large nonstick skillet, melt butter with remaining ¼ cup honey.
Add apples; cook and stir for about 4 minutes, or until apple slices are lightly caramelized and crisp-tender.
To assemble, place one waffle on each serving plate.
Top each with two ham slices and another waffle.
Top each sandwich with apple slices and syrup.
Makes 4 servings.
