Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon cloves
ground
½ teaspoon nutmeg
½ cup vegetable shortening

½ cup sour milk
3 tablespoons sugar syrup
burned, see note

2 large eggs
½ cup sourdough starter

Directions

Sift together first 7 ingredients.

Add next 5 ingredients.

Beat 3 minutes with electric mixer.

Fold In: ½ cup finely chopped nuts and ½ cup golden seedless raisins.

Bake in a greased and floured 13 x 9½ inch pan for 35 to 40 min at 350℉ (180℃).

NOTE: Burnt sugar syrup-- put ½ cup granulated sugar in a small skillet and stir over medium high heat until melted and quite dark.

Remove from heat, add ¼ cup water, and stir in well, but BE CAREFUL as the syrup splatters when water is added.
