90 minThis is a Dutch apple pie done right. Tart apple slices get coated in melted butter, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg before going into an unbaked pie shell. Then comes the topping: brown sugar, flour, melted butter, and chopped nuts mixed together and spread over the filling. It bakes until the crumb is golden and the filling is bubbling up around the edges.
The bubbling cue matters here. A pie that looks done on top but hasn’t started bubbling at the edges still has raw, crunchy apple underneath. Wait for the bubble.
The recipe includes a genuinely useful note: this pie can be frozen unbaked and baked straight from the freezer. That makes it an excellent candidate for holiday prep, when oven time is tight. Assemble, freeze, and bake when you need it.
Use walnuts, pecans, or whatever chopped nuts are in the pantry. All work. The crunch is what matters.
Pro Tips
- Use an unbaked shell, not a pre-baked one. The filling moisture cooks through the raw crust and keeps it from getting soggy.
- Tart apples like Granny Smith hold their shape and provide enough acidity to balance the sweet crumb topping.
- If freezing, wrap tightly in two layers of plastic wrap. Bake straight from frozen without thawing.
- Cover the pie loosely with foil if the crumb topping is browning too fast before the filling bubbles.
Variations
- Oat crumb topping: Substitute ¼ cup of rolled oats for the flour in the topping for a heartier, more textured crumb.
- Spiced topping: Add a pinch of cinnamon and cardamom to the crumb topping for extra warmth.
