60 minHere’s a chocolate cake built for fun. The sour cream in the batter keeps every slice ridiculously moist, while melted unsweetened chocolate gives it that deep, honest cocoa flavor kids and adults both go wild for.
Baked in a 13×9 pan, it’s the ideal canvas for creative decorating. The “board game” concept means you can pipe paths, add candy game pieces, and let the birthday kid design their own edible adventure.
Top it with a creamy rum frosting that adds just a hint of warmth and sophistication to balance all that chocolate richness.
Chef Tips
- Melt the unsweetened chocolate gently in a double boiler or in 20-second microwave bursts, stirring between each. Scorched chocolate turns bitter fast
- Sour cream is doing double duty here: moisture and tenderness. Don’t substitute yogurt, which is thinner and more acidic
- Let the cake cool completely before frosting, or you’ll end up with a melted, sliding mess
- For the board game decoration, use a toothpick to sketch your design into the frosting first, then pipe over the lines with a contrasting color
Variations
- Swap the rum frosting for cream cheese frosting if you want to keep it alcohol-free
- Turn it into cupcakes (reduce baking time to 18-22 minutes) for easier party distribution
- Add ½ cup mini chocolate chips to the batter for extra pockets of melty chocolate
Ingredients
Directions
Beat margarine and sugar until fluffy.
Blend in sour cream, eggs, chocolate and vanilla.
Add combined dry ingredients alternately with milk, mixing well after each addition.
Pour into greased and floured 13 x 9 inch baking pan.
Bake at 350 degrees, 40 to 45 minutes or until wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Cool.
Frost with Creamy Rum Frosting.
