20 minTake a whole unsliced loaf, split it lengthwise, and suddenly you have a pizza that feeds a crowd without rolling a single ounce of dough. Italian sausage simmers briefly in water first so the slices stay juicy rather than drying out in the oven.
Pizza sauce seasoned with garlic and Italian seasoning goes on the cut sides, then sausage, onion, mozzarella, and provolone pile on. Both halves bake together on a sheet pan until the cheese is melted and spotted brown at the edges.
Cut across into portions right on the pan. Party food, game-day food, feed-a-crowd food.
Kitchen Tips
- Simmer the sausage in water before slicing. It cooks through gently and the slices won’t shrink and curl on top of the pizza.
- Slice the bread with a serrated knife so the cut face is even. An uneven surface means some spots get less sauce.
- Pull it when the cheese just starts to brown. The bread crust underneath continues to firm up from retained heat after it comes out.
