40 minDorothy’s foolproof butter cookie dough chills beautifully and handles like a dream, whether you’re rolling it thin for delicate cutouts or shaping it into decorated balls.
The powdered sugar gives these cookies a melt-in-your-mouth texture that’s softer than traditional sugar cookies.
Tint the dough with food coloring, roll in sparkling sugar, or use your favorite cookie cutters to create custom designs for every occasion.
Pro Tips
- Chill thoroughly: Several hours of refrigeration makes the dough easier to roll and prevents spreading during baking, keeping your shapes crisp and defined.
- Don’t overbake: Pull these cookies when they’re still pale and soft; they firm up as they cool and will be perfectly tender, not crunchy.
- Get creative: This versatile dough works for rolled cutouts, shaped balls, thumbprint cookies, or even pressed through a cookie press for elegant designs.
