Ingredients

2 cups rolled oats
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup vegetable shortening

1 cup brown sugar

½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ cup sour milk
Date filling:
½ cup dates
chopped
½ cup brown sugar
*
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 cup water
hot

Directions

To make the date Filling:

Add the dates, brown sugar, cornstarch, and water in a small saucepan, cook until thick, stirring constantly.

Remove from the heat and set aside.

To make the batter and assembling:

Mix the first five ingredients together thoroughly.

Dissolve soda in the sour milk, add to other ingredients and mix well.

Put half mixture in pan and cover with date filling.

Put rest of mixture on top and press down.

Bake in 350℉ (180℃) oven for 25 min.

Cool completely on a wire rack, then cut into the squares.

Totally agreed with the first review. These date squares were moist and delicious, not too sweet, but well balanced. I did a few changes to make them even healthier (see the linked recipe below).

Great for breakfast or snack.

Fantastic, healthy snack, not too sweet but
just sweet enough to satisfy the taste buds.
Very good for children (Dad's too).

where is the date mixture directions? dates are not listed in the ingredients!
