Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Our favorite easy salisbury steak and onions recipe. We always make enough extra gravy to serve over potatoes. So delish, it tastes like it took me day to cook!

1 can soup, french onion
1 ½ pounds ground beef
½ cup bread crumbs
1 large eggs
slightly beaten
¼ teaspoon salt
1 dash black pepper
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
¼ cup ketchup
¼ cup water
1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon prepared mustard

How to make salisbury steak

  1. In a bowl, combine ⅓ cup of the French onion soup with the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper. Shape into six oval patties.

  2. In skillet, brown patties: pour off any excess fat. Gradually blend remaining soup into flour until smooth. Add to skillet with remaining ingredients; stir to loosen browned bits.

  3. Cover, cook over low heat 20 minutes or until done. Stir now and then.

Made this tonight and everyone loved it. I did, however, make some changes. Firstly, I sautéed some fresh mushrooms in the pan first, then set aside, then browned the beef patties. When making the patties, I had to get a little creative. I seared the patties and removed them to the dish with the mushrooms. Then scraping up the fond on the bottom of the pan (the brown goodness), I added the flour, stirred until the flour was cooked, then went ahead making the sauce. Next time, I think I'll glaze the pan with ¼ cup of red wine. Then returned the mushrooms and patties to the pan, covered and simmered per instructions. I served it with egg noodles and a delightful, fresh, crisp salad to cut the richness. Soooooo good.
