70 minThis timeless chocolate cake delivers rich cocoa flavor in every bite without any fussy techniques.
Butter, sugar, and eggs get beaten until light and fluffy, then cocoa-laced flour alternates with water to create a tender, moist crumb.
Bake as two layers for a towering celebration cake or in a sheet pan for easy serving.
Frost with your favorite chocolate frosting for pure chocolate bliss.
Kitchen Tips
- Beat butter mixture well: Three minutes of high-speed beating creates a light, airy base
- Alternate wet and dry: This classic technique prevents lumps and ensures even mixing
- Blend just until combined: Overmixing develops gluten and makes the cake tough
- Test for doneness: A wooden pick inserted in the center should come out clean
- Cool completely: Warm cake will make the frosting melt and slide off
Variations
- Add a teaspoon of espresso powder to intensify chocolate flavor
- Fold in chocolate chips for extra richness
- Use chocolate buttercream, cream cheese frosting, or ganache for topping
