Tender chocolate muffins made with applesauce instead of extra fat. Warming spices and optional raisins turn breakfast into a treat that feels indulgent but sneaks in fruit.

These muffins prove you don’t need a stick of butter to make something worth waking up for. Applesauce keeps them moist while cocoa powder delivers real chocolate flavor (not just a hint).

Cinnamon and nutmeg add cozy warmth that plays beautifully with the chocolate, and raisins bring little pockets of natural sweetness if you’re into that. If not, leave them out or swap in chocolate chips for double chocolate action.

They bake up in 20 minutes flat, making them perfect for weekday mornings when you want something homemade without the fuss.

Pro Tips

  • Mix the melted butter and cocoa together first so the cocoa dissolves smoothly without lumps
  • Blend the batter just until the flour disappears (overmixing makes muffins tough and tunneled)
  • Use natural unsweetened applesauce for best flavor and texture
  • Fold in the raisins gently at the very end to distribute them evenly without overworking the batter
  • Grease the muffin cups well since these muffins can stick due to the cocoa
