No refined sugar, no problem. These brownies get all their sweetness from apple juice concentrate and ripe banana, proving you don’t need a sugar bowl to satisfy a chocolate craving.
Whole wheat flour gives them a hearty, nutty backbone while cocoa powder brings that deep chocolate flavor you’re after.
Walnuts soaked in apple juice add moisture and crunch throughout every square.
The recipe makes a generous 24 brownies from a 13×9 pan, and they freeze beautifully, so you can grab one whenever the mood strikes.
Chef Tips
- Soak the walnuts in the apple juice concentrate for at least 15 minutes so they absorb flavor and add extra moisture to the batter
- Use a very ripe banana for the most natural sweetness
- Press the walnuts gently into the batter with the back of a spoon so they don’t just sit on top and burn
- Cover while still slightly warm to trap steam and keep the brownies soft rather than dry
