Mix together the starter, milk, flour, and applesauce, and let stand in a covered bowl in a warm place.
Cream together the sugars and butter. Add the beaten egg and mix well. Add spices. You may also add a half cup of raisins or chopped nuts, or a mixture of the two.
Beat by hand until well mixed and no lumps remain. Bake at 350℉ (180℃) in well greased cake pan (8 or 9 inch) for 30 to 45 minutes.
Test for doneness with a knife when half an hour is up. Allow to cool until cold before cutting and serving.

Wonderful
I made this in a 9 inch cake pan. It overflowed the pan. Delicious, but glad I had a cookie sheet on the lower rack. Now I make it in a bundt pan. Love it! It would be helpful to say how long the recommended time is to let sit covered before adding creamed butter and sugar to the sourdough and flour mixture. And, it's nice with craisins.
