Three ingredients, five minutes, zero cooking. This is the no-fuss French onion dip that shows up at every potluck for a reason: it just works.

You stir a packet of Knorr onion soup mix into a base of sour cream and a little mayonnaise, and that’s it. The soup mix does all the flavor work, packing in toasted onion and savory seasoning, while the sour cream and mayo make it cool, creamy, and tangy.

The one thing that takes it from good to great is patience. Letting the dip chill for an hour or two gives the dried onion time to soften and the flavors time to bloom, so it tastes deeper and less raw.

Set it out with ridged potato chips, pretzels, or crisp raw vegetables.

Pro Tips

  • Chill at least an hour before serving so the onion flavor blooms and mellows.
  • Use full-fat sour cream for the richest, creamiest texture.
  • Stir well so the soup mix is evenly distributed, with no dry pockets.

Variations

  • Stir in fresh chopped chive or a little caramelized onion for extra depth.
  • Lighten it with Greek yogurt in place of some of the sour cream.
  • Add a dash of Worcestershire or hot sauce for a savory kick.
