Herring recipes

I recently came across another way to use up some of those cartons of oats and bags of bran spilling out of my pantry. Brandi of Bran Appetit posted an intriguing recipe for Brandi's Cookie Bars. My wife has an excellent recipe for White Bread brought to this country from her grandmother who was originally from Poland. Makes 5 loaves. Typically, this style of bread would be served with baked ham. However it can go with almost anything. Stale leftovers can make excellent French toast.

"This cake is a rich, dark, moist fruit cake, very flavorful at Christmas. Try icing with almond paste for a more festive touch. This recipe is started in October or November so as to let it mellow before the holidays. I remember very well my mother storing her fruit cake in an old butter churn that belonged to my grandmother and great grandmother. I wish that I had that old crock."

My grandma used to make this carrot cake for me every year when I was at her place during summer vacation. It was the best carrot cake ever because it was packed with love :)

These cakes are eaten buttered, with a glass of milk, for supper, but are also good with oily fish such as herring or mackerel. They are also terrific with wine and cheese.

Pickled Herring recipe

I found this recipe in a magazine and the lady was talking about making them with her two daughters, it was such a nice story, I thought I would try them and they are so yummy, I have made them over and over. They would be great to take camping or on a picnic or just eat them with a loved one, and if you have help making them what could be better.
