Graveyard Treat

Chocolate wafers and crumbs

You can use Oreos or store-bought chocolate wafers for your chocolate wafer crumbs, but we like to make our own, which can be shaped as desired or baked and whizzed up in a food processor to make homemade chocolate wafer crumbs.

Our favorite recipe is Slice & Bake Chocolate Wafter Cookies, which we keep in our freezer so they're ready to bake at a moment's notice.

Reduced sugar

Use sugar-free orange Jello and substitute your favorite sugar substitute for the sugar in the cream cheese mixture or elsewhere in the recipe.

Directions

Mix 2 cups of the chocolate wafer cookie crumbs, ¼ cup of the sugar, and the melted butter or margarine with a fork in a 13 by 9 inch (33 x 22 cm) baking pan until the crumbs are well moistened.

Press the crumb mixture firmly onto the bottom of the pan to form a crust.

Refrigerate.

Beat cream cheese and remaining ¼ cup sugar in a medium bowl with a wire whisk until smooth.

Gently fold in ½ of the whipped topping. Spread evenly over the crust.

Stir boiling water into gelatin added to a medium bowl for a couple of minutes or until the gelatin is completely dissolved.

In a 2 cup measure, combine cold water and ice cubes to make 1½ cups.

Add to gelatin; stir until slightly thickened.

Remove any remaining ice.

Spoon gelatin over the cream cheese layer.

Refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours or until firm.

Spread the remaining whipped topping over the gelatin just before serving; sprinkle with remaining ¼ cup cookie crumbs to create the "dirt".

Decorate chocolate wafer sandwich cookies with icing as desired to make "tombstones."

Stand the tombstones on top of the dessert with candies to resemble a graveyard.

Cut into squares to serve.
