1 hrsThere’s a reason they call this one “death by chocolate." A thick, fudgy cake batter loaded with unsweetened chocolate and tangy sour cream gets split in half, and between those layers? A molten river of melted caramels, butter, and sweetened condensed milk.
The result is pure over-the-top indulgence. The cake bakes up dense and dark while that caramel center stays sticky and pull-apart gooey.
This is the kind of dessert that earns its dramatic name. One slice and you’ll understand why nobody ever brings home leftovers.

- Let the caramel filling cool for just a minute before pouring so it doesn’t sink completely through the batter
- Use room temperature sour cream and eggs for a smoother batter with fewer lumps
- The batter is supposed to be thin from the boiling water, so don’t panic. That’s what makes it so moist
- Let the cake cool completely before slicing or the caramel layer will ooze everywhere (unless that’s your thing)

Grease and flour a 9×13 inch pan.
Set aside. Sift together cake flour, baking soda, and salt.
Set aside. Beat butter and sugar together in large mixing bowl.
Blend in the eggs and beat until light and fluffy.
Stir in vanilla and melted chocolate.
Add the dry ingredients alternately with the sour cream, beating well after each addition.
Stir in the boiling water.
Batter will be thin. Pour half of the batter into the prepared cake pan.
Bake at 350℉ (180℃). for 10 to 12 minutes until firm to the touch.
Meanwhile, prepare filling by mixing butter, caramels and condensed milk in a suacepan and melt over low heat, stirring often.
When melted, pour the mixture over the half-baked cake.
Pour remaining cake batter over the caramel mixture and return to oven.
Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until firm to the touch.
