This is old-fashioned Jello salad at its most nostalgic. Red hot cinnamon candies melted into boiling water give the gelatin its signature pink-red color and that warm, spicy bite that sets this apart from every other molded salad on the potluck table.

Lemon Jello mixed with applesauce and a squeeze of lemon juice creates an apple-forward base with just enough tartness to balance the candy sweetness. The applesauce also gives the set gelatin a slightly opaque, creamy look rather than the clear wobble of plain Jello.

The cream cheese topping is the finishing touch. Softened cream cheese beaten smooth with evaporated milk spreads into a tangy, creamy layer on top that contrasts beautifully with the spicy-sweet gelatin below. Cut it into squares for clean, neat servings.

Directions

Place candies in 2 cups boiling water, boil until candies melt.

Dissolve jello in boiling water.

Add applesauce and lemon juice and 1 cup cold water.

Chill until set.

Mix cream cheese and milk.

Spread on top of jello.

Cut into squares.
