Forget round. Forget square. This pizza is a butterfly, and your kids are going to lose their minds over it.

The dough gets shaped into two big wings with a snake-like body down the center, then loaded up with tomato sauce, gooey mozzarella, and whatever toppings your crew demands.

It’s part craft project, part dinner, and 100% the kind of meal that gets little hands excited about cooking.

Variations

  • Bug party: Divide the dough into 4 pieces and let each kid shape their own creature. Spiders, ladybugs, dragonflies, snakes... the wilder the better.
  • Veggie butterfly: Top with colorful bell pepper strips, olive slices, and cherry tomato halves to make the wings really pop.
  • Taco butterfly: Swap tomato sauce for salsa, use cheddar, and top with shredded lettuce after baking.

Kitchen Tips

  • Grease the baking sheet generously with olive oil so the dough slides off easily and crisps on the bottom.
  • Don’t stress about making the butterfly symmetrical. Rustic shapes have more character.
  • Let the pizza cool a few minutes before slicing so the cheese sets and the toppings stay put.

CUPS ML TOMATO SAUCE
3 cups
MOZZARELLA CHEESE
grated, or cheddar or monterey jack *

Directions

Preheat oven to 475 degrees F. Grease a large flat baking sheet with olive oil.

Separate ⅓ of the dough and set aside. On a greased baking sheet shape the remaining two-thirds of the dough into a butterfly with 2 wings. Roll the reserve d piece of dough into a snake and position in the center of the two wings as the body.

Pull some of the body dough up to shape into a head and pull some of the body dough down for a tail.

Spread sauce over the wings. Sprinkle with cheese and decorate with toppings of choice.

Bake the pizza on the middle rack of the oven for 20 to 30 minutes until crust is golden brown and cheese is bubbly. Serve warm.

As an alternative the dough can be divided into 4 pieces and then shaped into bug or creature of choice, i. e. spider with legs, ladybug, dragonfly, snake, etc
