A buttery vanilla wafer crust gets topped with a creamy layer of whipped butter and confectioners’ sugar, then piled high with chocolate whipped cream folded with walnuts, ripe banana, and sliced maraschino cherries.
The whole thing chills overnight (or gets frozen), letting the layers meld into something rich, fudgy, and wonderfully nostalgic.
It’s the kind of dessert your grandmother might have brought to a Christmas party in a refrigerator tray, and honestly, nobody has improved on the concept since.
Kitchen Tips
- Beat the butter and confectioners’ sugar until truly light and fluffy, then add eggs one at a time for a smooth, mousse-like layer
- Whip the cream with cocoa and sugar until it holds stiff peaks so the chocolate layer stays structured when sliced
- The full 24-hour chill (or freeze) is non-negotiable; it lets the layers set and the flavors develop
- Use a ripe banana with brown spots for the sweetest, most intense banana flavor in the chocolate layer
