This is old-school weeknight cooking at its finest. No fancy ingredients, no long list, no fuss.

Blade steak gets browned in oil with onions, then simmered in boiling water until tender.

Lemon juice and brown sugar go in at the end, creating a tangy-sweet pan sauce that coats the beef and soaks into fluffy rice underneath.

Kitchen Tips

  • Brown the beef in batches so you get a proper sear. Crowding the pan steams the meat instead of caramelizing it.
  • Blade steak loves a long simmer. The connective tissue breaks down and turns the meat fork-tender. Don’t rush it.
  • Adjust the sweet-sour balance to your taste. Start with the listed amounts, then add more lemon or sugar as needed.

Directions

Heat the oil in a large saucepan and brown the meat. Add the onion and cook until they are soft.
