The cream cheese mixture is the secret ingredient. Softened to a smooth paste with sour cream, it spreads between the noodle layers and melts into a silky filling as the casserole bakes. A teaspoon of sugar in the meat balances the acid in the tomato sauce; small but worth it.

The two-cheese topping (a sharp cheddar and grated Parmesan) gives the casserole its golden, crackly crown. Skip the urge to overload on noodles. The recipe specifically warns that too many noodles dry the dish out, so let the rich meat and cream cheese layers shine.

Directions

Brown meat; add salt, pepper and sugar.

Mix cream cheese with sour cream; set aside.

Put half of the cooked noodles in bottom of 7×12 inch baking dish .

Top with meat.

Spread with sour cream mixture.

Top with other half of noodles (some noodles will be left over, too many noodles make the dish too dry).

Sprinkle with parmesan and sharp cheese.

Bake at 350℉ (180℃) for 30 minutes.
