Honey-kissed pears: canned pear halves warmed in a cinnamon-orange syrup with brandy, raisins, and honey. A low-effort dessert that pairs with ice cream or yogurt.

A quick dessert that uses pantry pears to surprising effect. Canned pear halves get warmed in their own syrup, now spiked with cinnamon stick, grated orange peel, brandy, raisins, and honey, until the liquid reduces into a glossy glaze that tastes like it took an hour longer than it did.

The trick is in the reduction. Simmering that canning liquid down to a quarter cup concentrates the pear flavor and marries it to the cinnamon and orange. Skip the reduction and you end up with thin, watery syrup that slides off the fruit.

Honey and vanilla go in off the heat. Both are delicate, and long cooking muddles honey’s floral edge and burns off vanilla’s aroma. Adding them at the end keeps their personalities intact.

Serve warm over a scoop of vanilla ice cream, alongside a slice of pound cake, or with plain yogurt for a lighter finish. Also excellent cold the next morning stirred into oatmeal.

Chef Tips

  • Pull the cinnamon stick and orange peel before stirring in raisins so the flavors don’t turn bitter or overpowering.
  • Use a dark amber honey like buckwheat or chestnut for deeper complexity, or mild clover honey for a cleaner pear focus.
  • Skip the brandy if serving kids and replace with an equal splash of orange juice for a boozy-note substitute.

Variations

  • Swap raisins for dried cranberries or chopped dried cherries for tart contrast.
  • Add a pinch of cardamom along with the cinnamon for a Middle Eastern touch.
  • Use fresh ripe pears poached in apple juice for a from-scratch version.
