5 minAll the flavors of a Black Forest cake in a warm mug. Fresh brewed coffee gets stirred with chocolate syrup and a tablespoon of maraschino cherry juice, then crowned with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and a cherry on top.
The cherry juice is what makes this more than just a mocha. It adds a sweet, fruity undertone that rounds out the bitterness of the coffee and the richness of the chocolate. One tablespoon is enough to notice without overwhelming the drink.
Brew the coffee strong. A weak cup gets buried under the chocolate syrup and cherry juice, and you end up with flavored sugar water instead of a proper coffee drink. A dark roast or espresso-strength brew holds its own.
Chef Tips
- Use the juice straight from the maraschino cherry jar. It’s already sweet, so you shouldn’t need extra sugar.
- Stir the chocolate syrup and cherry juice into the hot coffee before adding toppings. The heat helps everything dissolve and blend evenly.
- Use real whipped cream, not the canned stuff. A quick whip of heavy cream adds a luxurious layer that slowly melts into the coffee.
- Shave the chocolate with a vegetable peeler over the whipped cream for elegant curls.
