45 minSloppy Joe meets pizza in this kid-pleasing dinner mashup. Ground beef browned with barbecue sauce and corn replaces traditional tomato pizza sauce, and a pre-baked pizza crust gets you on the table fast without any dough wrestling.
Barbecue sauce is the secret. Instead of standard sloppy joe seasoning, the smoky-sweet BBQ glaze gives the meat a richer, more pizza-friendly flavor that holds up under melted cheese. Frozen corn thawed and stirred in adds little pockets of sweetness and visual color throughout the meat layer.
Monterey Jack is the cheese of choice for this build. It melts smooth and creamy without overpowering the BBQ flavor like sharp cheddar would. Top with extra green onions after baking for fresh contrast and color. Pair with a simple coleslaw or potato salad for a casual weeknight dinner the whole family will request again.
Kitchen Tips
- Drain off the beef fat thoroughly. Leftover grease soaks into the crust and turns the bottom soggy.
- Use a thick-and-chunky barbecue sauce rather than thin runny varieties. Thick sauce stays put on the crust during baking.
- Pre-bake the pizza crust if your package suggests it. A partially baked crust holds up better under the heavy meat topping.
- Sprinkle cheese over the meat as evenly as possible. Spotty cheese coverage means uneven melting and burnt patches.
Variations
- Swap Monterey Jack for shredded cheddar for a sharper, more traditional sloppy joe flavor.
- Add diced bell peppers or jalapeños to the beef mixture for color and heat.
- Use ground turkey instead of beef for a lighter version with the same BBQ flavor profile.
