30 minThis French toast lightens things up without sacrificing flavor. One whole egg plus two egg whites (instead of the usual all-yolk batter) keeps it golden and custardy while cutting back on richness. Whole wheat bread adds a nutty depth that white bread just can’t deliver.
Orange zest in the batter brings a fragrant citrus note that pairs perfectly with the cinnamon and vanilla. It’s a small addition that makes a big difference. You’ll smell it the moment the bread hits the hot skillet.
The orange slices served alongside are worth the extra step. Fresh seedless oranges tossed with sugar and vanilla, then left to sit for an hour so they release their juices into a light, fragrant syrup. That vanilla-orange syrup soaks into the hot French toast and replaces the need for heavy maple syrup. A sprinkle of wheat germ on top adds a toasty crunch.
Pro Tips
- Start the orange slices first since they need an hour to macerate. Prep the French toast while they rest.
- Use sturdy, thick-sliced whole wheat bread. Thin slices fall apart in the egg mixture.
- Cook over medium heat. Whole wheat French toast browns faster than white, and high heat will burn the outside before the egg custard sets through.
- A nonstick skillet with just a tablespoon of oil is all you need. No butter bath required.
Variations
- Swap orange slices for fresh strawberries macerated with sugar and a splash of balsamic vinegar.
- Use cinnamon raisin bread instead of plain whole wheat for extra sweetness.
- Top with a dollop of Greek yogurt instead of syrup for added protein.
