This straightforward cake brings together plump raisins and crunchy walnuts in a moist brown sugar base.

Simmering the raisins with shortening and spices before mixing infuses every bite with warm cinnamon flavor.

The low oven temperature bakes the cake gently for an hour, ensuring even moisture throughout.

Cut into squares straight from the pan for casual snacking or potluck sharing.

Baking Tips

  • Let the simmered mixture cool completely before adding flour to prevent lumps
  • Use dark brown sugar for deeper molasses flavor and extra moisture
  • Check doneness with a toothpick at the center; it should come out clean and dry
  • Cool completely in the pan before cutting for cleaner edges on your squares
