15 minThis fruit frappe is summer in a glass. Five fresh fruits, watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, mango, and strawberries, get blended with orange juice, a touch of sugar, and crushed ice into a thick, frosty slush that’s naturally vibrant and refreshing.
Blending in batches is the key to getting the texture right. Filling the blender only halfway with the fruit mixture, then topping with crushed ice, means the blades can work efficiently and produce a smooth, uniform consistency instead of leaving chunks behind.
Serve immediately. This frappe melts fast, and that thick, slushy texture is the whole point. Once it turns into a warm juice, the experience is gone.
Kitchen Tips
- Use ripe, in-season fruit for the sweetest, most flavorful results. Out-of-season melon tastes like water.
- Crush the ice before adding to the blender. Whole cubes don’t blend evenly and leave icy chunks.
- Adjust the sugar to your fruit’s sweetness. Ripe mango and watermelon may need less; tart strawberries may need more.
Variations
- Skip the sugar entirely and add a ripe banana for natural sweetness and a creamier texture.
- Add a splash of coconut milk for a tropical, dairy-free smoothie version.
- Freeze the fruit ahead of time and skip the ice for a thicker, smoothie-bowl consistency.
