Halloween snacking just got a whole lot more fun (and sneakily healthy).

These “Toxic Tomatoes” are broiled tomato halves loaded with creamy mashed avocado, bubbly Swiss cheese, and fresh basil, all dressed up with gross-out names that kids absolutely love.

The avocado becomes “sludge," the melted cheese turns into “oozing pus," and the basil? That’s “poisonous plant matter," obviously.

Beneath the spooky theatrics, you’ve got a genuinely wholesome snack that takes 20 minutes and uses just 5 real ingredients. They’re great warm from the broiler or cooled down enough to eat with your hands.

Kitchen Tips

  • Use firm, ripe tomatoes so they hold their shape under the broiler. Overripe ones will collapse into mush
  • Watch them closely under the broiler. Five minutes is usually the sweet spot, but broilers vary wildly
  • Let the kids help with the mashing and naming. Half the fun of this recipe is the presentation

Directions

Wash the tomatoes and cut them in half crosswise.

Place the halves - open side up - on a cookie sheet.

In a small bowl, mash together the avocado (sludge), grated Swiss cheese (pus), and basil (poisonous plant matter).

Spoon the mixture on top of the tomatoes and sprinkle with oregano (fly wings).

Broil the tomatoes for 5 minutes, or until pus begins to ooze.

Carefully remove the tomatoes from the broiler and serve hot, or allow to cool slightly and eat them with your hands.
