40 minSkip the late-night drive and make a whole tray of these White Castle-style sliders at home. Seasoned ground beef cooked with onion soup mix gets bound with cheese and a little mayo, spread across slider rolls, and baked until the cheese is melty and the buns are pillowy soft.
The foil is the trick to that signature soft, steamed-bun texture. Covering the assembled sandwiches while they bake traps steam, which keeps the rolls tender and melts the cheese evenly throughout, just like the steamed buns of the original.
A few small moves help. Drain the beef well after cooking so the sliders do not turn greasy, and lean on the onion soup mix for that classic oniony flavor, no extra seasoning needed. Assemble on a connected slab of rolls and cut into individual sliders for easy serving. Set out sliced pickles and watch them vanish at any party.
Kitchen Tips
- Cover with foil while baking to trap steam, which keeps the rolls soft and melts the cheese evenly.
- Drain the cooked beef well so the sliders do not turn greasy.
- Assemble on a connected slab of rolls and cut into sliders after baking for easy serving.
Variations
- Add finely diced onion to the beef for even more classic slider flavor.
- Use American cheese for the meltiest, most authentic result.
- Add a smear of mustard or ketchup, and always serve with dill pickles.
Ingredients
2 lbs hamburger
1 (1.25 oz) envelope onion soup mix
1/2 c mayo
2 c shredded cheese
24 Hawaiian dinner rolls, split
1/2 cup pickles (optional)
Directions
Preheat oven to 350℉ (180℃). Cover a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray. Mix together ground beef and soup mix in a large skillet. Cook and stir over medium-high heat until done. Drain. Remove from heat and stir in mayo and cheese. Lay bottoms of rolls on prepared baking sheet. Spread the cheese and beef mix on the bottom half of the rolls. Replace the tops. Cover with another sheet of aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray. Bake until the burgers are heated through and cheese is melted. About 20 to 30 mins. Serve with sliced pickles.
