10 minThis is a four-ingredient copycat of the iconic mall-food-court Orange Julius, the frothy orange drink that defined American shopping centers for decades. The whipped topping mix is what creates the signature creamy froth on top, the part that makes Orange Julius different from regular orange juice.
Use cold, freshly squeezed or bottled orange juice. Frozen-concentrate orange juice reconstituted with cold water also works and gets you closer to the original commercial recipe. Pulpy juice is fine, the blender breaks up the pulp into the drink.
The whipped topping powder (Dream Whip or similar) is the key ingredient. It dissolves into the cold liquid and whips up under the blender’s action, creating the airy foam cap that makes this drink memorable. Skip it and you have a basic orange smoothie.
A full teaspoon of lemon juice is the brightening agent. The acid sharpens the orange flavor and prevents the drink from going one-note sweet. You won’t taste lemon specifically, just a more vivid orange.
The original recipe gives you a choice between a raw egg or ¼ cup of orange sherbet. The sherbet route is the modern preference, safer and richer. If using raw egg, use a pasteurized one for food safety.
Blend a full minute. This is longer than feels necessary. The extended time is what aerates the mixture and develops the signature foam. Short blends produce a flat orange juice without the airy texture.
Serve immediately over ice. The foam settles within a few minutes, so this isn’t a make-ahead drink. Blend right before serving for the best experience.
Kitchen Tips
- Use whole milk or half-and-half (½ cup) along with the whipped topping for extra creamy results.
- Pre-chill the orange juice and glasses for the coldest, frostiest drink.
- Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract for the deeper flavor that distinguishes the commercial version.
- For a thicker drink, freeze the orange juice into cubes first and blend those in place of liquid juice.
Variations
- Swap orange sherbet for vanilla ice cream for a creamsicle version.
- Add 1 banana to the blender for a tropical orange-banana smoothie.
- Use frozen mango chunks plus orange juice for a tropical Orange Julius-style drink.
