25 minThis is the kind of no-bake holiday candy project made for an afternoon with kids and a hot melting bowl on the counter. Regular salted tortilla chips get dipped in melted vanilla candy coating, then arranged overlapping in a circle on waxed paper to form a sweet-salty edible wreath.
The salt on the chips is what makes it actually good instead of just cute. Plain sweet candy coating alone is one-note; the tortilla chip salt cuts through and tastes a little like a salted caramel. Gumdrops pressed in while the coating is still wet become the “holly berries” of the decoration.
The shape forms naturally as you work: the first ring of chips goes around a 6-inch circle traced on waxed paper, then successive chips overlap and stack to create the ruffled, layered wreath look. Let it set, peel off the paper, and you have a centerpiece that gets torn apart and eaten at dessert time.
Kitchen Tips
- Melt the candy coating on medium power, not high. Scorched coating turns grainy and seizes into a lump that won’t coat the chips.
- Add a tablespoon of shortening to the coating. It thins the coating so chips get a clean, even layer instead of a thick glob.
- Work fast. Once the coating starts to cool in the bowl, it thickens quickly. Reheat in 20-second bursts as needed.
- Use a slotted spoon or fork to let excess coating drip off each chip before placing. Too much coating hides the chip texture.
- Let the wreath set completely, at least 30 minutes, before moving. Half-set coating cracks when you try to lift it off the paper.
Variations
- Swap vanilla coating for white chocolate or a mix of dark and white drizzled for contrast.
- Sprinkle crushed peppermint candies, sprinkles, or edible glitter over the wet coating for extra festive flair.
- Use chocolate-covered pretzels or candy cane pieces in place of gumdrops for a different decorative accent.
