Stuffed celery is retro party food that deserves a comeback, and this version makes a strong case. Shredded provolone, minced ham, softened butter, and a dash of Worcestershire get blended into a savory spread and piled into celery sections. Five minutes, no cooking, done.

Provolone brings a sharper, smokier flavor than the usual cream cheese base. Mixed with butter it becomes spreadable but still has enough body to mound up in the celery groove without slumping. The ham adds little salty, meaty bits throughout, and the Worcestershire ties everything together with its fermented umami kick.

Pile the filling lightly, not packed tight. You want it to look generous and fluffy, and a lighter fill lets you taste the crisp, watery snap of the celery alongside the rich cheese.

Kitchen Tips

  • Let the butter soften completely at room temperature. Cold butter won’t blend smoothly with the cheese and you’ll end up with lumps.
  • Mince the ham as fine as you can. Chunky pieces make the filling hard to spread evenly.
  • These hold up well on a platter for a couple of hours, but keep them chilled until guests arrive so the butter stays firm.

Variations

  • Spicy provolone: Use sharp or smoked provolone and add a pinch of cayenne for a version with more bite.
  • Olive addition: Fold in finely chopped green olives for a briny, Mediterranean twist on the classic stuffed celery.
