This genius make-ahead casserole layers tender elbow macaroni with cubed ham and a double dose of melty cheddar and mozzarella cheese, all bound together with a simple egg and milk custard.

The magic trick? You freeze it unbaked, then pop it straight from freezer to oven whenever you need dinner fast.

A sprinkle of paprika adds warmth and a gorgeous golden color on top.

After baking, let it rest for 5 minutes so the custard sets up perfectly for slicing, revealing those beautiful cheesy layers in every forkful.

Kitchen Tips

  • Use leftover holiday ham or deli ham, both work beautifully in this recipe
  • Thaw overnight in the fridge for more even cooking, or bake from frozen adding 15-20 extra minutes
  • Cover with foil for the first 30 minutes if the top browns too quickly
