| 1 | ounce | chocolate unsweetened | |
| 1 | tablespoon | butter | or margarine |
| 1 | teaspoon | vanilla extract | |
| 1 | each | pie shell (9 inch) | baked 9inch |
| 1/2 | teaspoon | cream of tartar | |
| 1/4 | cup | sugar | plus, 2 tb sugar |
Combine 1 cup sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a heavy saucepan; mix well.
Combine milk and egg yolks; beat with a wire whisk 1 to 2 minutes or until frothy.
Gradually stir into sugar mixture, mixing well.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and bubbly.
Remove from heat; add chocolate, butter, and vanilla, stirring until chocolate and butter melt.
Spoon mixture into pastry shell; set aside.
Beat egg whites and cream of tartar at high speed of an electric mixer 1 minute.
Gradually add 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until stiff peaks form and sugar dissolves (2 to 4 minutes).
Spread meringue over hot filling, sealing to edge of pastry.
Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes
