| 28 | ounces | tomatoes | |
| 1/4 | cup | parmesan, parmigiano-reggiano cheese, grated | |
| 1/2 | teaspoon | sugar | |
| 1 | tablespoon | olive oil | |
| 2 | each | onions | chopped |
| 4 | each | garlic cloves | crushed |
| 7 | ounces | tomato sauce | |
| 1/2 | cup | red wine | optional |
| 1 | each | green bell pepper | |
| 1 | teaspoon | basil | |
| 1/2 | teaspoon | oregano leaves |
Heat oil in a large saucpan set over medium heat. In a medium sized saucepan set over medium heat add whole tomatoes and herbs and spices with tomato sauce, parmesan and sugar in a medium sized saucepan set over medium heat. Break up tomatoes with a spoon as you stir. Simmer, uncovered for 5 min.
Saute for 2 min. Add remaining ingredients. Cover and bring to a boil, stirring often. Then, reduce heat and simmer, stirring often for at least 5 min.
I loved it!
I double the whole recipe except the herbs and it turned out wonderfully!

This was very good, and easy to make. Everyone at work loved it when I brought it to our potluck. I would suggest soaking the top layer of bread cubes in the egg mixture before putting them on top of the other layers, otherwise it's hard to get all of them covered. I might cut down a little on the cream cheese, too. It was a little rich. Otherwise, it was wonderful!
