This Halloween showstopper is pure kid-party gold: a jiggly dome of orange Jello with gummy worms frozen mid-crawl inside, like they got caught trying to escape. When you unmold it onto a plate, the worms peek through the wobbly orange surface and it looks gloriously gross.

The timing on the worms is the whole trick. You let the gelatin set until it’s thick but not firm, about 90 minutes. Push the worms in at that stage and they stay suspended throughout instead of sinking to the bottom or floating to the top.

Unmolding takes a little nerve: a quick 15-second dip in warm water, a moistened plate on top, and a confident flip. If the gelatin sticks, run warm (not hot) water over the outside of the pie plate for a few more seconds.

Kitchen Tips

  • Spray the pie plate with non-stick cooking spray before pouring in the gelatin. This makes unmolding dramatically easier.
  • Stir the gelatin for the full two minutes to dissolve completely. Undissolved granules make cloudy, grainy spots in the finished mold.
  • Don’t push the worms in too early or they’ll sink. Wait until the gelatin holds a spoon impression before adding them.
  • Moisten the serving plate before flipping. This lets you slide the gelatin into position if it doesn’t land perfectly centered.

Variations

  • Use lime green Jello for a slime-themed version, or mix green and orange layers for extra creep factor.
  • Add gummy spiders, eyeball candies, or gummy body parts for a full Halloween horror spread.
  • Make individual servings in clear plastic cups so each kid gets their own wormy treat to take home.

Directions

Stir boiling water into gelatin in large bowl at least 2 minutes until completely dissolved.

Stir in cold water.

Pour into 9-inch pie plate that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.

Refrigerate about 1½ hours or until thickened (when a spoon drawn through leaves a definite impression).

Push gummy worms into gelatin.

Refrigerate 2 hours or until firm. Unmold by dipping pie plate in warm water about 15 seconds.

Gently pull gelatin from around edge with moist fingers.

Place moistened serving plate on top of pie plate.

Invert pie plate and serving plate; holding plates together, shake slightly to loosen.

Gently remove pie plate and center gelatin on serving plate.

Garnish with additional gummy worms, if desired.
