Laundry Soap
Submitted by Jsudweekks
Homemade liquid laundry soap made from grated bar soap, washing soda, and borax. This budget DIY detergent gels overnight and uses just half a cup per load, with essential oils for scent if you like.

60 minMaking your own laundry soap is one of the easiest ways to cut your household budget. Three cheap, long-lasting ingredients yield gallons of liquid detergent for a fraction of the price of the bottled stuff.
It comes together like a basic kitchen reduction. Grate a bar of soap, melt it down in water on the stove, then stir in washing soda and borax until everything dissolves clean.
From there it is all dilution. The melted soap mixture gets stirred into a bucket of hot water, then more water still, until you have a full batch ready to thicken.
Patience is the only hard part. Left to sit for about 24 hours, the mixture gels and thickens on its own. It will look lumpy and uneven, a lot like egg drop soup, and that is exactly right, so do not panic.
A little goes a long way. Just half a cup cleans a full load, which is why a single batch lasts so long.
Tips
- Grate the soap finely so it melts quickly and evenly without leaving stubborn chunks.
- Stir the washing soda and borax in until fully dissolved to avoid a gritty residue.
- Give it the full day to gel; the texture stays loose and watery if you use it too soon.
- Add a few drops of essential oil, like lavender or lemon, once it cools if you want a light scent.
Variations
- Stir in a scoop of oxygen brightener for extra stain-fighting power.
- Use a fragrance-free, dye-free bar of soap for sensitive skin.
- Shake or stir before each use, since homemade soap naturally separates over time.
Ingredients
1/3 bar Fels Naptha soap
1/2 c washing soda
1/2 c borax powder
optional: essential oil, your choice of scent
2 gallon size bucket
Directions
Grate the soap and put it in a sauce pan. Add 6 cup water and heat it until the soap melts. Add the washing soda and the borax and stir until it is dissolved. Remove from heat. Pour 4 cup hot water into the bucket. Now add your soap mixture and stir. Now add 1 gallon plus 6 cup water and stir. Let the soap sit for about 24 hours and it will gel. Add essential oils if desired.
You use ½ cup per load.
The soap will resemble “egg drop soup." Don’t be alarmed!!
