Crunchy Crispix cereal coated in melted chocolate and peanut butter, then shaken in powdered sugar. The classic puppy chow snack mix everyone fights over.

If you’ve never made puppy chow (also called muddy buddies), prepare yourself. This stuff is wildly addictive.

Crispix cereal gets drenched in a melted mix of chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter, then tossed in a bag with powdered sugar until every piece is coated in a sweet, dusty shell.

It takes about 30 minutes, most of which is waiting for things to cool down. The real challenge is not eating the entire batch before it makes it into the tin.

This is the snack that disappears first at bake sales, holiday parties, and movie nights. Make a double batch. Trust the process.

Kitchen Tips

  • Melt the chocolate mixture in short bursts and stir between each one. Scorched chocolate is a sad thing.
  • Let the coated cereal cool slightly before adding the powdered sugar. Too hot and the sugar melts into a gummy layer instead of that signature dusty coating.
  • Crispix works best because it holds up under the chocolate. Chex is the classic alternative.
