8 Major Weight Loss Hurdles

Trying to lose weight can be challenging enough, but there are several things that can make it even more so—from fad diets, to unhealthy attitudes. Take a look at these eight major weight loss hurdles that you may face as you try to become healthier.

1. Focusing on the number of calories

All calories are not created equal. Eating well does not mean only limiting your calories. It is important to get the right balance of calories and develop good eating habits. Focus less on the number and more on the quality of the calorie that you consume, and your weight loss efforts will be more successful.

2. Guilt

Don’t beat yourself up too much if you happen to slip and cheat on your diet. Everyone makes mistakes. Those who feel guilty and give up on their weight loss efforts after making a few mistakes are never going to be successful—and probably always feel bad about eating. Pick yourself up from small mistakes and get back on track as soon as possible.

3. Elimination Diets

Diets that are super strict and eliminate entire classes of foods, such as gluten free diets, no-carb diets, sugar free diets, no-dairy diets, etc. are typically going to lead to problems in the long term. Sticking to a highly restricted diet is more difficult than sticking to a healthy, balanced diet. Unless you are eliminating certain foods or food types for a medical reason, remember that most foods can be part of a healthy diet, and your weight loss efforts will ultimately be more successful and long lasting.

4. Portion Sizes

Yes, even healthy foods can be consumed in unhealthy portions. Certain “healthy” foods, such as avocados, nuts and olive oil can end up helping you pack on the pounds, instead of just contributing the healthy nutrients intended. Keep an eye on your portion sizes!

5. Limited Fat, Protein and Fibre

All three of these things are a necessary part of a healthy diet to help your body systems function effectively and also help you feel fuller longer. When you are eating enough of the right fats, proteins and fibres, you will be less likely to overindulge and your weight loss efforts will show!

6. Refined Carbs

Many people find it difficult to eliminate the refined carbs from their diet. These are the carbs to avoid, the ones found in processed foods, snack foods and baked goods. They are always at arm’s reach in many households, which can lead to consuming them regularly—a big no-no for a healthy diet, especially if you are trying to lose weight.

7. All-or-Nothing Attitude

Overeating on one day is not going to completely derail your diet. Overeating every day for a week will. It is important that you get over any incidents or mistakes when you are trying to lose weight, and get back on track, rather than simply abandon your efforts because you messed up once or twice.

8. Unsupportive Supports

When you are working on controlling your weight or making healthy lifestyle choices, it is important to surround yourself with those who will support your efforts. When you hear negative comments about your food choices, or are constantly tempted by unhealthy choices, it’s time to make a change! Focus on your own health and make that your commitment.

Committing to a weight loss plan is a big step toward a healthy lifestyle. Understand what you are up against! While it might not be easy, it can be done, so stick to the plan and you will see results!
