| 2 | cups | sugar | |
| 1/2 | teaspoon | salt | |
| 1 1/8 | cups | vegetable shortening | |
| 2 | large | eggs | |
| 1 | cup | milk | |
| 1 | teaspoon | baking powder | |
| 1 | teaspoon | baking soda | |
| 1/2 | cup | water | boiling |
| 2 | teaspoons | vanilla extract | |
| 1 | x | flour, all-purpose | to stiffen |
| 1 | ounce | star anise |
Mix sugar, salt, shortening, eggs,and milk.
Add vanilla and anise seeds to the sugar mixture.
Mix baking powder and soda into a cup or so of flour.
Mix the flour into the sugar mixture.
Continue to add enough flour to the sugar mixture to stiffen until the dough is not sticky, up to 4 or 5 pounds.
Roll out dough on floured surface, and cut with cookie cutters.
Bake immediately at 325-350 degrees F for 10-15 minutes.
Eat plain, dusted with sugar, or decorated.
Optionaly, half the recipe to make 7-8 dozen cookies.
