Caramelized onions take on deep sweetness as they slowly cook in butter before joining the beef stock in your crockpot.

Six to eight hours on low lets the onions practically dissolve into the broth while sugar and flour create silky body.

Stir in grated Parmesan just before serving for nutty, salty richness that makes this soup unforgettable.

Chef Tips

  • Cook onions slowly in a covered skillet until translucent before adding sugar for proper caramelization
  • Use homemade beef stock or quality store-bought for the best flavor foundation
  • Sprinkle Parmesan into individual bowls rather than the whole pot for better texture
  • Top with toasted baguette slices and extra cheese, then broil for traditional French onion presentation
