Submitted by kay1955
Chocolate and nut crumb cake built on a yellow cake base with a buttery cinnamon-chocolate-chip-nut crumble baked into the top. Semi-homemade dessert with bakery-style results.

1 hrsThis crumb cake is the ultimate dressed-up box mix. A classic yellow cake gets topped with a thick buttery streusel of flour, sugar, cinnamon, chocolate chips, and chopped nuts that bakes right into the surface for the kind of cake you’d expect from a real bakery counter.
The partway-baking trick is what sets this cake apart. The cake bakes alone for the first 30 minutes, just long enough for the surface to set firm. Then the heavy crumb mixture goes on top and finishes baking. Add the topping at the start and the streusel sinks straight to the bottom, leaving a buttery puddle instead of a crackly crust.
Double the cinnamon you’d normally use isn’t a typo. Four teaspoons gives the topping that powerful warm spice note that distinguishes a proper crumb cake from a generic streusel.
Use a mix of pecans and walnuts, or whatever nuts you have on hand. Toasting them lightly in a dry skillet before chopping deepens the flavor noticeably.
Pro Tips
- Use a yellow cake mix labeled “with pudding” as the recipe specifies. The pudding adds moisture and structure to support the heavy crumb topping.
- Soften the butter to room temperature, not melted. Melted butter makes a soupy crumb instead of distinct crumbly chunks.
- Press the topping gently with your fingertips before returning to the oven so it adheres to the partially-set cake surface.
- Let cool at least 10 minutes before slicing. The crumb topping needs time to set or it will slide off in slabs.
Variations
- Swap chocolate chips for white chocolate chips and use macadamia nuts for a tropical twist.
- Use chocolate cake mix instead of yellow for a double-chocolate version.
- Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the crumb topping for an extra layer of warmth and aroma.
