As it bakes, the oats absorb the milk and apple juices, swelling into a soft, porridge-like layer between tender cinnamon-spiced fruit.
The covered bake for the first 45 minutes steams everything soft and lets the oats hydrate fully. Pulling the lid for the final 15 minutes crisps the top layer of oats into a golden, slightly crunchy crust that contrasts with the soft, saucy interior.

Directions
Cut apples into slices.
Combine sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
Place half the apples in a nonstick baking dish and sprinkle with half the sugar mixture.
Dot with half the butter. Sprinkle half the oats over all.
Arrange another series of layers.
Then add milk. Cover and bake 350℉ (180℃) for 45 min.
Remove the cover and bake 15 min. more. Serve hot or cold.
