What is a cheaper version of sour cream...can one use buttermilk, or what is a cheaper alternative????

SOUR CREAM SUBSTITUTE

1/4 c. non-fat milk powder
1/2 c. cold water

Blend until liquified with 8 ounce of low-fat cottage cheese, 2 teaspoons lemon juice and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Keep refrigerated until used.
CONVERSIONS: 1 cup plain flour - to self-rising flour; add 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt. To use honey instead of sugar in rolls and pies and bread. Use a little less.

8 oz. uncreamed cottage cheese
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1/4 tsp. salt

Mix together milk and water and blend well with cottage cheese. Mix in lemon juice and salt. Keep refrigerated until needed.

Yogurt is a great option when needing to substitute sour cream. Yogurt is significantly lower in calories and is packed with more protein, making it a much healthier option. Typically when a recipe calls for sour cream you never need the entire container, so although yogurt may be more expensive on a $/oz basis, you at least have the option of buying closer to the amount that you need.
