Puppy Chow
Submitted by MollyStevens
Puppy Chow is the classic no-bake party snack: Chex cereal coated in melted peanut butter and chocolate, tossed in powdered sugar until every piece looks like a sweet snowdrift. Addictive by the handful.

90 minPuppy Chow, also called Muddy Buddies, is the no-bake sweet snack that disappears fastest at every potluck, game day spread, and holiday cookie swap. The method is simple but technique matters: the peanut butter, butter, and chocolate chips melt together into a glossy coat, then get poured over Corn Chex and folded gently so the cereal stays intact instead of shattering into crumbs.
The powdered sugar shake in a paper bag is the trick that gives this snack its signature look. Don’t skip letting the chocolate cool slightly before coating the cereal or the sugar turns gummy instead of powdery white.
This is an easy recipe for kids to help with and it keeps for a week in an airtight container, though it rarely lasts that long.
Kitchen Tips
- Melt the chocolate mixture slowly over low heat or in 30-second microwave bursts. Scorched chocolate seizes and ruins the batch.
- Use a large paper grocery bag for shaking, it coats more evenly than a bowl and makes cleanup a breeze.
- Let the coated cereal cool fully on wax paper before bagging, otherwise trapped steam makes the coating tacky.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or freeze for up to 2 months.
Variations
- Swap milk chocolate chips for dark or white chocolate for a different flavor profile.
- Add a cup of mini M&Ms, pretzels, or mixed nuts after coating for crunch and color.
- For a holiday twist, use red and green sanding sugar alongside the powdered sugar.
