Some foods end up with a bad reputation that is perhaps undeserved. When you consider some of the health benefits of these foods, it is not only unfair to label the foods as off-limits, but you are also denying yourself some wonderful choices that can certainly be part of a healthy diet.
Take a look at this list, and reconsider avoiding them completely!
Cheese: For people interested in the scientific evidence, a recent study in Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism confirms the fact that those who consume larger amounts of dairy products have lower blood sugar and blood pressure.
Even more interesting, people who consume dairy products with higher fat contents, and many servings of them (think 8 or more servings per day!) actually are nearly 25% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, when compared with those who limit their intake of high fat dairy products.
White Potatoes: This is a food that certainly got a bad reputation as being a “white, starchy food.” But, the reality is, white potatoes are filled with fibre and contain nearly 25% of the recommended daily amount of potassium.
Frozen Produce: Frozen fruits and vegetables are considered just as healthy as their fresh, produce department versions. This is partially because frozen fruits and vegetables are picked and frozen right at their peak, when they contain the most nutrients.
The produce you find in the fresh produce department could have already traveled for days, or longer, losing their potency.
Full Fat Foods: All fat is not bad for you! Even more importantly, when you are choosing reduced fat versions of certain foods, you are consuming additives and ingredients that are included to replace the fat and retain taste.
Most of the time, you are better off with occasional splurges of the full fat foods, as opposed to more frequent consumption of the reduced-fat varieties.
Simple Carbs: When you understand the difference between simple carbs and refined carbs, you will learn that not all carbs are bad for you.
Certain simple carbs, like the ones contained in fruits, honey and milk, are very good for you and offer plenty of nutrients as well as antioxidants. They can also give you a great midday energy push when you are feeling sluggish!
Don’t just completely avoid foods for the wrong reasons! Make sure you know what you are putting into your body, and that you are striving for a balanced, healthy diet!
