Wormy Apples
Submitted by chem-mom
Wormy apples turn caramel apples into a Halloween creepshow with red sugar coating and gummy worms peeking out. A no-bake treat kids beg to help with every October.

30 minRoll a warm caramel-coated apple in crimson sugar, plant a gummy worm on top, and watch kids absolutely lose it. This is the kind of Halloween project where the line between dessert and crime scene gets satisfyingly blurry, and that’s the whole point.
The red sugar has to stick while the caramel still has tack, so work fast once each apple comes out of the dip. A cooled caramel sheds the sugar in a sad pile on your plate. Use firm tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp; soft mealy ones turn to mush under the warm caramel.
Serve one per plate so the worm presentation lands. These look unhinged on a Halloween dessert table next to something pale and unsettling.
Kitchen Tips
- Wash and dry apples thoroughly before dipping. Any wax or moisture and the caramel slides right off.
- Push a wooden skewer into the stem end before dipping so kids have a handle.
- Press the gummy worm gently into the warm caramel so it stays put as it sets.
- Refrigerate for 15 minutes to firm up the coating before serving.
Variations
- Swap red sugar for black or orange sanding sugar for a different creep factor.
- Drizzle melted white chocolate over the set caramel for a spiderweb effect.
- Use sour gummy worms for a tart contrast against the sweet caramel.
