Sugar mixture got too hot

I have made Divinity in all temperatures. Today I decided to try a candy thermometer and it must be broke. The mixture never reached the hard ball temperature and started to smell like burnt sugar. When I started to add slowly to whipped egg whites they turned to just a liquid mess. Maybe the old fashioned cold water test is the best. Help!!!
