Helpdesk email request from Mari:

Am looking for a recipe that my grandmother used to make - I know it's a depression era recipe using a cooked flour mixture, butter and sugar.
Gram has passed away and we cannot find any recipe card on this. Can you help? My 22 year old daughter, whose birthday is this Saturday (11/6)has requested this and we are searching. Much thanks.

Is it possible you're talking about Wartime cake?

WARTIME CAKE

1 c. granulated sugar
1 1/2 c. cold water
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 c. raisins
Cook the above ingredients for 5 minutes. Allow to cool; if allowed to get too cold, mixture will become too stiff to stir in the following ingredients:

2 c. flour
1 tsp. soda
Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until done. Remove from oven and immediately top with a mixture of the following ingredients:

5 tbsp. brown sugar
3 tbsp. butter
3 tbsp. milk
1 c. or 1 can Baker's Moist Angel Flake Coconut
Brown under broiler, but watch very closely as this browns very quickly.
