My grandmother use to make sour-lime pickles. She did not use sugar in her recipe. This recipe was not written down so it is lost. My guess is she invented it during the depression era due to sugar not being implemented into the recipe.

LIME PICKLES
7 lbs. pickles, sliced
1 gal. water
1 c. dehydrated lime
Pour water and lime mixture over pickles and let stand 24 hours. Wash off in clean water and stand in clean water 4 to 6 hours.
Mix: 3 tbsp. salt
1 tsp. pickling spice
2 qts. vinegar
1 tbsp. celery seed
1 tsp. whole cloves
Pour above liquid over pickles in evening and let stand overnight. Next morning heat and simmer 30 minutes. Pack pickles into quart jars. Boil liquid and pour over pickles and seal. 4 quarts.
